Prevention, magazine, Mar. 1998, reminds us that eating the right foods helps keep the mind clear, quick and sharp and helps to fight off diseases.

“Abstemiousness in diet is rewarded with mental and moral vigor.” CDF:126.

Here is a list of eight (8) Laws that positively affect and improve the mind

  1. Law of Mental Exercise (also see Lifestyle blog on physical exercise)
“It is a law of the mind that it will narrow or expand to the dimensions of the things with which it becomes familiar.”- Mind, Character, and Personality, Volume 1, page 101,
  2. Law of Beholding
“It is a law of the mind that it gradually adapts itself to the subjects upon which it is trained to dwell.” Mind, Character, and Personality, Volume 2, page 418
  3. Law of Decisiveness
“It is an important law of the mind–one which should not be overlooked–that when a desired object is so firmly denied as to remove all hope, the mind will soon cease to long for it and will be occupied in other pursuits. But as long as there is any hope of gaining the desired object, an effort will be made to obtain it.” Mind, Character, and Personality, Volume 2, page 419
  4. Law of Mental Hierarchy
The higher powers (conscience and reason) must rule the lower powers (emotions and feelings.
“Man [before sin] was to bear God’s image, both in outward resemblance and in character…. His nature was in harmony with the will of God. His mind was capable of comprehending divine things. His affections were pure; his appetites and passions were under the control of reason.” PP 45
  5. Law of Liberty
Law of Liberty: Mankind is created in the image of God and liberty is a part of that image. Liberty is the freedom to choose an action bases on your reasoning, thoughts and desires. Without liberty true love is not possible.
“God has given us ability to think and to act, and it is by acting with carefulness, looking to Him for wisdom, that you will become capable of bearing burdens. Stand in your God-given personality. Be no other person’s shadow. Expect that the Lord will work in and by and through you.” Mind, Character, and Personality Volume 1, page 103
  6. Law of Mind and Body
“The brain nerves which communicate with the entire system are the only medium through which Heaven can communicate to man and affect his inmost life. Whatever disturbs the circulation of the electric currents in the nervous system lessens the strength of the vital powers, and the result is a deadening of the sensibilities of the mind.” 1MPC 230
  7. Law of Actions
Physical action and words change mental thoughts and feelings.
” It is a law of nature that our thoughts and feelings are encouraged and strengthened as we give them utterance. While words express thoughts, it is also true that thoughts follow words.” MH 251-253 (1905).
  8. Law of Grace
How the Holy Spirit affects our Brain.
“By the grace of Christ it is possible for us to reject impure thoughts. Jesus will attract the mind, purify the thoughts, and cleanse the heart from every secret sin.” Christian Temperance and Bible Hygiene p136

“God requires of His people continual advancement. We need to learn that indulged appetite is the greatest hindrance to mental improvement and soul sanctification. With all our profession of health reform many of us eat improperly. Indulgence of appetite is the greatest cause of physical and mental debility, and lies largely at the foundation of feebleness and premature death. Let the individual who is seeking to possess purity of spirit bear in mind that in Christ there is power to control appetite.” –Ellen White, Counsels on Diet and Foods, p. 127.
